The Bay Area's public transportation is on the verge of collapse. Both the San Francisco Bay Area Light Rail (MUNI) and the San Francisco Bay Area Railroad (BART) will face deficits exceeding $300 million by 2027. The solution? A voting proposal aimed at raising $1 billion annually through sales taxes. Guess who's funding this? SEIU 1021, the union representing transit workers. The Truth Unions donate to politicians, politicians negotiate contracts with unions, and taxpayers foot the bill. When the bills get too high, unions launch tax increases to pay for the contracts they negotiated. The cycle repeats itself. SEIU's donation isn't about "saving public transportation," it's about preserving their contracts. There's a fundamental difference. The Problem Labor costs dominate public transportation budgets. It's not track maintenance, not new trains, not increased service, but personnel costs. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is seeing an ever-increasing number of administrators while service quality is declining. "Fair Competition" Sounds good. But "fairness" shouldn't mean "everything unions squeeze from the politicians they help elect." That's not negotiation; it's a kickback scheme of money and power. "This is a passport to public service." Traffic has indeed decreased. But these institutions were already operating at a loss before the pandemic. Working from home only accelerated this process.
