A new study led by BGI Genomics and published in *Nature Communications* has mapped the "infection genome" of 858 rodents and shrews in southern China, revealing 76 potential pathogens, including 33 newly emerging ones. By sequencing individual organs, researchers found high parasite loads in the lungs and multiple RNA viruses in the gut, suggesting that brown rats and kangaroos are important viral spillover hubs requiring urgent monitoring.
