A very interesting proposal from @VitalikButerin to use BLOBs as the unified storage layer for all blockchain history and state data (). In fact, several years ago we anticipated that Ethereum would naturally evolve into three interconnected networks: - A voting network, composed of validators and zk-verifiers, incentivized primarily through block rewards; - A builder network, consisting of block builders and zk-provers, capturing MEV and potentially other in-protocol rewards shared with validators; - A storage network for history and state, built around a unified storage primitive (BLOBs), with the incentive model still to be fully defined. One of the original motivations behind starting EthStorage was to become the first BLOB-native storage network, backed by a purpose-built proof-of-storage incentive mechanism. It is exciting to see Ethereum steadily converging toward this architecture. @VitalikButerin proposed a very interesting idea: using BLOB as a unified storage layer to carry all historical data and status data of the blockchain. In fact, several years ago we predicted that Ethereum would naturally evolve into three types of collaborative networks: - Voting Network: Composed of validators and ZooKeeper validators, primarily incentivized through block rewards; - Builder Network: Composed of block builders and ZooKeeper provers, sharing rewards with validators through MEVs or other potential in-protocol incentives; - Storage Network: Responsible for the long-term storage of historical and state data, based on the unified storage primitive (BLOB), whose incentive mechanism still needs further refinement. One of the initial goals of the EthStorage project was to become the first storage network to natively support BLOBs, and to provide sustainable economic security for this layer through our designed Proof-of-Storage incentive mechanism. It is gratifying to see Ethereum steadily evolving towards this long-term vision.
