This Hong Kong fire has truly shocked me.
One of the worst disasters in sixty years…
So many homes, so many lives lost…
After seeing the reports, I'm even more disheartened. Exterior wall repairs, scaffolding materials, safety management, corporation decisions… so many avoidable issues were overlooked. The fire didn't start suddenly; it's the consequence of prioritizing safety over safety over long-term cost.
Watching the fire surge upwards in the video, all I could think was, if that were my home, I wouldn't even have time to be afraid.
The fire alarm didn't sound; smoke suddenly flooded my home; the scaffolding wasn't fireproof; workers carelessly discarded cigarette butts; eight buildings underwent repairs simultaneously just to save money…
I was just an observer, but seeing that thick smoke, seeing residents fleeing in panic, truly broke my heart. It's not that Hong Kong can't be safe; it's just that too many people are used to being irresponsible.
May all those affected be safe 🙏 And I hope the truth of this incident will be told, not glossed over.
