The fire didn't start suddenly; it's the consequence of prioritizing safety over safety over long-term cost. Watching the fire surge upwards in the video, all I could think was, if that were my home, I wouldn't even have time to be afraid. The fire alarm didn't sound; smoke suddenly flooded my home; the scaffolding wasn't fireproof; workers carelessly discarded cigarette butts; eight buildings underwent repairs simultaneously just to save money… I was just an observer, but seeing that thick smoke, seeing residents fleeing in panic, truly broke my heart. It's not that Hong Kong can't be safe; it's just that too many people are used to being irresponsible.
