Joining an AI Company ≠ Understanding AI
1. KPI-Driven
Most positions at "AI companies" are unrelated to AI itself (marketing, growth, operations, advertising spending). Unless you're involved in setting the direction, it's difficult to truly grasp the pulse of the industry.
If you're already in the industry and pursuing higher career advancement, that's fine. But if your goal is to understand AI, use AI for development, or enhance your cognitive abilities, working at an AI company might actually take you off track.
2. Business Goals ≠ Industry Goals
Business focuses on short-term KPIs; the industry focuses on long-term trajectories. Once you fully commit to business, you accept information asymmetry and begin striving for the goals of others.
Fundamentally, running a business and understanding the industry are two opposite directions.
On the other hand, if you're a founder,
you'll also want your employees to focus on execution, not get caught up in grand "AI future" visions.
So, how do you truly "get on track"?
1. Build your "AI Advisory Board."
You can consult with people like A (responsible for 2C products), B (responsible for model updates), and C (responsible for image generation), etc. At the same time, ensure you possess some unique strengths, such as a deep understanding of capital, users, or product logic.
2. Follow a path driven by curiosity.
Choose a field and trace its entire stack: from data to models to products.
I used to study 2C, and now I'm delving into gaming and payments. Once you master the technology stack, everything else is just adding or removing layers.
