The cryptocurrency community isn’t new to scams and hacks. Throughout the years of its existence, perpetrators have found ways to make money through naive investors. Despite increased regulatory oversight during the past couple of years, these scams have continued to prevail. More recently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a report that highlights how Americans lost a staggering $9.3 billion due to crypto-related scams in 2024.

It should be noted that the latest numbers in crypto fraud are a record high. It is up 66% from $5.6 billion the year before, according to the FBI. Speaking about the same, B. Chad Yarbrough, operations director at the FBI’s criminal and cyber division, said,

“The criminals Americans face today may look different than in years past, but they still want the same thing: to harm Americans for their own benefit.”

Who Was Hit The Hardest By Crypto Scammers?

Despite making up a lower percentage of the population, the FBI discovered that Americans 60 and older are the most susceptible to crypto fraud. It should be noted that those over 60 make up only 17% of the U.S. population. Yet, they accounted for nearly $2.8 billion, or 30%, of all crypto fraud losses.

According to the agency, this group reported 33,369 complaints involving crypto. The average loss stands at $83,000 per victim. This is more than four times the average loss of $19,372 for all other online crimes.

In addition to this, the total complaints received over crypto stand at a staggering 149,686 during 2024.

The above graph comes as a surprise considering the increased oversight by authorities on the industry. But the crypto market has witnessed massive growth, particularly in 2024. This is in terms of popularity as well as value. The rise in fraud could be due to the same.
