The owner of the chicken farm had always disliked missionaries. He felt that most missionaries said one thing and did another. So he often spoke ill of them. One day, two missionaries came to his farm, saying they wanted to buy a chicken. These two men spent a long time browsing the vast chicken farm, finally bringing out a lame rooster that was almost completely plucked and extremely ugly. The owner was very puzzled and asked them why they had chosen this particular chicken. The missionary replied, “We want to buy this chicken and raise it in the monastery courtyard to show everyone that it’s from your chicken farm, and to give you some publicity.” The owner immediately became agitated: “No way! Look at all the chickens in this farm, every single one is beautiful and plump. This one is always fighting, that’s why it looks like this. If you use it as a representative, letting everyone think all our chickens are like that, it’s really unfair to me.” Another missionary chuckled and said, “Yes, a few missionaries may have questionable behavior, but you’re using them as representatives. Isn’t that equally unfair to us?” The chicken farm owner then realized his mistake.
