The midwife had to spank my bottom and pat my feet until I cried, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Life was hard in those days, so when I was only 8 months old, my parents went south to work. I grew up on rice cereal and formula with my grandparents. He was one of only two educated people in the village, with beautiful handwriting, gentle and refined. Even after suffering a stroke and becoming immobile, he always kept himself clean and tidy. Even though my parents' income was meager and they couldn't send me living expenses, they never let me go hungry, and I was even chubbier than many other children.
