Who will own OpenAI? According to a report by The Information, OpenAI is undergoing a major restructuring of its ownership structure, transitioning from a nonprofit, limited-return model to a traditional corporate equity structure. The restructuring plan, which values OpenAI at $500 billion, includes:
Microsoft, as the largest external shareholder, will acquire approximately 28% of the company's shares (valued at $140 billion);
The nonprofit board of directors will acquire approximately 27% of the company's shares (valued at $135 billion);
Current and former employees will collectively hold approximately 25% of the company's shares (valued at $125 billion); Investors in the new funding round, led by SoftBank, will collectively hold approximately 13% of the company's shares (valued at $65 billion); and
Early investors will receive approximately 1% of the company's shares (valued at $5 billion).
In addition to equity, Microsoft is also seeking guaranteed use rights to OpenAI's intellectual property after 2030.
